The Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS) is administered every year to Florida's middle and high school students. Every other year (during even years), survey results provide data broken down by county. In 2009, a group of authors put together a comprehensive study that estimated the cost of underage drinking in the state of Florida. Using multiple sources of data, the collection was able to establish costs in different domains as a result of youth alcohol consumption. According to the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (2007), 55.6% of Florida youth surveyed have used alcohol over their lifetime, while 31.2% reported use in the last 30 days. Youth alcohol use has been shown to leas to violent crimes, delinquency, sexual deviance, academic failure, and accidents. It is estimates that the economic cost of underage drinking for Nassau County is 15.3 million dollars, with the highest percentage of cost coming from violent crime and the second highest from motor vehicle crashes.
